Newton School Committee members were greeted by NTA members at their monthly Ed. Center meeting. Carrying brightly colored signs stating "Thank Your Teachers," Newton educators displayed solidarity by overflowing the hallways to make it clear that a contract is needed NOW!
It’s Thanksgiving week – so what are we doing here tonight?
As educators we teach our children about Thanksgiving. Historically, it was a time when people would assemble with the bounties of their respective harvest – to share in their good fortune as an act of gratitude, faith, and hospitality. And then, families would join together in a festive community meal, partaking of the bounty.
In the interest of community and history, the NTA would like to recognize this holiday and bring forth to you our bounty – that which we have freely given and shall for the foreseeable future continue to give to Newton.

NTA: Don't Assume We Will Agree to a Salary Freeze
Posted 3/26/09 on WickedLocal.com/Newton
The head of Newton’s teachers union is pushing back on a proposed pay freeze next year, and said it is “presumptuous” for parents and school leaders to ask teachers to make sacrifices, even in a time of a down economy and a tight school budget.
“I always find it interesting that the community is asking people educating children to make sacrifices,” said Cheryl Turgel, president of the Newton Teachers Association, in an interview with the TAB.
“We’re already giving our best every day to the children of the community when many of us could’ve chosen other professions where we would have earned more money.” Click HERE to read the rest...

Cheryl Turgel, NTA President
Good morning Mayor Cohen, Dr. Marini, Chairperson Laredo, Dr. Stein and all of my friends and colleagues here this morning.
Here it is another opening day of school where we gather to get the year officially started. No matter how many of these I have attended, I am always filled with the same sense of excitement and optimism. It is one of those days that is truly unique to our profession. We are fortunate to be able to mark off a new year and have a new start each September. Whatever our year was like last year, we know that this will be different! Summer is now behind us, but whatever you were involved in during that time, I hope that you had a chance to find some balance in your life and that you are returning today refreshed, rested and relaxed... Camp21 Gets Teachers Ready for the 21st Century
As Newton’s curriculum calls for more technology in the classroom, even the most tech-savvy teachers can find themselves lost among software applications. But for four days in June, more than 90 teachers went to Camp 21 to learn how to integrate more technology into their everyday lesson plans... Click HERE to read the rest at Newton Wicked Local.
Embracing Technology in our Schools
Like something out of “The Jetsons,” Mingos’ specialized computer screen, called a Smart Board, records the movements and gestures she draws on it with a specialized pen tool and displays them as red or blue markings superimposed on a text document. She uses the board’s proprietary software to save the marked-up document to a laptop’s hard drive and will post it online later. Click HERE to read the rest at Newton Wicked Local.
